Insomnia is a disorder characterized by an inability to sleep or a total lack of sleep. Z-drugs are a group of non-benzodiazepine drugs, which are effectively used to treat the symptoms of insomnia. If you have sleeping problems and get a prescription from your doctor for insomnia medicine, most likely it will be one of the Z-drugs. The generic names for these drugs all contain the letter Z. The Z-drugs includes Eszopiclone (Lunesta), Zaleplon (Sonata), Zolpidem (Ambien) and Zolpidem Zopiclone (Imovane).

The difference between Z-drugs and benzodiazepines

The effects of Z-drugs are similar to the benzodiazepine group of drugs, but at the same time, they have some advantages over benzodiazepines. For example, opposite to benzodiazepines, which actually worsen sleep architecture, Z-drugs have less or no disruption of sleep architecture.

Many sleep-inducing drugs belong to the benzodiazepine class of drugs, but Rhovane Zimovane is a non-benzodiazepine treatment in the cyclopyrrolone family of drugs. The same as benzodiazepine, cyclopyrrolone drugs are part of the group of drugs known as central nervous system depressants. CNS depressants are chemicals that slow down brain activity. By doing so, they help people to relax, calm, sleep, get rid of anxiety, inhibitions, and unconsciousness.

Rhovane Zimovane belongs to the class of drugs called sedative-hypnotics and has exactly the same composition as Zopiclone. That is is used for the short-term relief of sleep disturbances. Patients should not use it for more than a week or two, also recommended, that a course of treatment should employ the lowest effective dose.

Although sometimes benzodiazepines are still used for insomnia disorders, their mechanism of action is based on modulating benzodiazepine receptors and they are only indicated when the disorder is severe, disabling or subjecting the individual to extreme distress. Z-drugs are better because the side effects are less severe and they are not as habit-forming.

Both benzodiazepine and non-benzodiazepine drugs work in the brain on the gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABA-A) receptors, the same as many drugs used to stimulate sleep. The main difference between Z-drugs and benzodiazepines is: benzodiazepines act on GABA-A receptors that include subunits of the alpha-1, alpha-2, alpha-3, and other classes. The Z-drugs are much more selective for the alpha-1 subclass which causes sleep.

Sleep disorders affect a person’s health – lack of sufficient amount of sleep has been linked closely to the development of diabetes, heart diseases, depression, and high blood pressure. A person with insomnia can’t have a normal rest and be effective at work.

Alternative treatment for insomnia includes behavioral therapies and lifestyle changes. Together with medications, great results can be achieved. In terms of medication – Z-drugs have proven themselves as an effective medicine for the treatment of insomnia. These medications have largely replaced traditional benzodiazepines, they are also safer when are used properly as a short-term treatment.
